Teach Your Children Honor by Putting Toys Away

A mother pointing to a sign that says, Try It Again, Your New Mama Script, what to say and how to teach your children to honor by putting their toys away, positive parenting solutions with Kimberly Muhtar and the Renewed Mama Podcast, parent coaching, clean up toys tips

Catch yourself shouting at your kids because their toys are all over the place? Can’t sit down on the couch because it is full of stuffed animals? Teach your children to honor others by putting their toys away when they are done playing with them.

This is the Try Again, Your New Mama Script Monday series on the Renewed Mama Podcast.

A CHANCE TO TRY AGAIN

We give our children the chance to try again when they throw a temper tantrum, meltdown, or disrespect us or a sibling.  We let them try again to teach them how to respond in a better way.

Sometimes, Mama, we need to give ourselves a chance to try again when we don’t respond in the best way either.

So I’m sharing what you probably think or say, or how you probably respond that once it’s out, it makes you cringe with “That wasn’t so nice.  I should really apologize” even if you feel frustrated, annoyed, or impatient.

I’m helping you try again with a better way to think, to speak, and to respond to your children. We are learning and we are growing in this Mama thing.  We get to renew.  So here’s your new Mama Script.

TOYS ARE EVERYWHERE!

You are ready to watch a movie. You have your blanket and freshly popped buttery popcorn, and you go to sit on the couch, and there is a stuffie take over!  There are more stuffed animals on the couch than there is popcorn in your bowl!

Who is watching a movie?  The stuffies or you?

Before you shout “Kids, get these stuffies out of here!” FREEZE and REWIND.

Try again by making it a fun moment!  Fall backwards on the couch full of stuffies or jump onto the big pile!  Wheeee!

Be prepared to let them do the same because of course they won’t be able to resist!

WHAT TO SAY TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO HONOR BY PUTTING THEIR TOYS AWAY

Then say to your children, “Please would you clean up your stuffed animals?  It honors others when you put your things away and help to keep the house tidy.”

“When you are done playing with your stuffies, put them away so that the couch is ready for other things like movie time.  This is honoring.  Thank you.”

AWARD THEM WITH A SPEAK LIFE BADGE FOR BEING HONORING

Give your children a Speak Life Badge when they help by putting their toys away when they are done playing with them. Celebrate this especially if they clean up without being asked.
